Monkeypox can be spread through close contact, for example skin-to-skin, with infected people or animals. To control the outbreak and slow its spread, the FDA has approved the following two monkeypox vaccines

  • Jynneos or Imvanex

This vaccine contains a live virus designed to prevent infection in people who are at high risk for monkeypox. This vaccine needs to be given in two doses with a gap of 4 weeks between the first and second doses. If you've had the smallpox vaccine in the past, chances are you'll only need to get one dose. This vaccine is also safe for use in people with HIV, people who have eczema or other skin conditions, and people who have other conditions thatweaken the immune system.

  • ACAM2000

This vaccine was originally used to fight the smallpox virus, but now it can also be used to prevent monkeypox. This vaccine contains live viruses that can reproduce. After getting this vaccine, it takes about four weeks for the body to build an immune response to the virus.

  1. People Who Need to Get Monkeypox Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States recommends the vaccine for people who have been exposed to monkeypox, or those who are at high risk of being infected with monkeypox. The targets of the monkeypox vaccine are:

  • People who have close contact with someone who is infected with monkeypox.
  • People who have had sex with someone tested positive for monkeypox.
  • People who work in laboratories and handle samples or animals with orthopoxvirus.
  • Health workers.
  • Children under the age of 8 years.

A person infected with monkeypox, the CDC recommends getting the vaccine within four days, after the date of exposure to get the best benefit. This will prevent the virus from multiplying. Vaccination can be given between 4 to 14 days after exposure, before symptoms develop.

The monkeypox vaccine can cause side effects, namely in the form of:

  • Pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site.
  • Itchy at the injection area.
  • Muscle ache.

"God willing, we will have around 10,000 vaccines later. And we will give it to those who are suffering from monkeypox in the incubation period and to close contacts," said Syahril as quoted from one of the national online media, Saturday (20/08/2022).

Meanwhile, for the type of vaccine to be used in Indonesia, the Ministry of Health is still waiting for a recommendation from the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM).
