Infusion is actually a method used to enter drugs into the body directly through the blood vessels. Well, this one infusion method is not necessarily given to every patient who falls ill, but only to patients who are no longer able to take drugs orally or by mouth.
Usually, the recommendation for infusion will be given by the doctor when the patient is already in a weak condition and requires medicine to enter the body immediately, so that the condition does not get worse. Examples of this condition include patients who are dehydrated, stroke, and poisoned. In these conditions, taking the drug orally by mouth will take a longer time because it must go through the digestive process first.
Method of Administration of Drugs Through Infusion
Apparently, there are two methods of administering drugs through an IV that can be used in conditions where a person needs intravenous fluids immediately. The two infusion methods include the manual method and also the pump.
In the manual method, infusion is done by relying on the force of gravity so that the amount of drug remains the same over a period of time. This method may be a method that you will often encounter in many patients. In this case, the nurse will usually adjust how fast the infusion fluid drips by reducing or increasing the pressure on the tube attached to the infusion tube.
As for the pump method, intravenous fluids are given by relying on an electric pump. In this case, the amount and rate of infusion needed can be programmed via a special pump.
