Usually, the recommendation for infusion will be given by the doctor when the patient is already in a weak condition and requires medicine to enter the body immediately, so that the condition does not get worse. Examples of this condition include patients who are dehydrated, stroke, and poisoned. In these conditions, taking the drug orally by mouth will take a longer time because it must go through the digestive process first. 

Method of Administration of Drugs Through Infusion

Apparently, there are two methods of administering drugs through an IV that can be used in conditions where a person needs intravenous fluids immediately. The two infusion methods include the manual method and also the pump. 

In the manual method, infusion is done by relying on the force of gravity so that the amount of drug remains the same over a period of time. This method may be a method that you will often encounter in many patients. In this case, the nurse will usually adjust how fast the infusion fluid drips by reducing or increasing the pressure on the tube attached to the infusion tube.

As for the pump method, intravenous fluids are given by relying on an electric pump. In this case, the amount and rate of infusion needed can be programmed via a special pump. Well, for this method itself, it can only be used when the dose of the drug to be given has been controlled and appropriate.

  • Install the pedestal.

  • Place a damming tourniquet about 15 cm above the vein to be punctured.

  • Use sterile gloves.

  • Provide disinfectant on the area to be punctured with a diameter of 5cm to 10 cm. 

  • Insert the IV catheter into the vein using a needle facing the heart.

  • Make sure the IV needle is completely inserted into the vein.

  • Connect the inserted IV needle to the infusion tube. 

  • Cover the insertion area using sterile dry gauze and then apply a plaster.

  • Adjust the infusion drip accordingly.

  • Take off the gloves.

  • Attach an implementation label that includes information about the name of the implementer and the time of implementation. 

  • Cleaning tools and washing hands.
